‘AMI for Budding MFIs’ was completed successfully last week in Lucknow from 13th to 23rd April 2009. The training programme included four technical sessions on Basic Financial Management & Accounting, Financial Ratio Analysis, Process Mapping and Human Resource Management. The trainers were all from the MicroSave team and included Mr. Soumya Harsh Pandey, Mr. Vishrant Shukla, Ms. Diana J. Lewin, Mr. Neeraj Lal, Mr. Mukul Kumar Singh, Mr. T.V.S. Ravi Kumar and Ms. Jyoti Srivastava. The training programme was held from April 13-23, 2009 and a total of fifty participants from various MFIs participated and went away with a variety of learning and skills with them which will help them run their organisations in a better way.

The participants learned a lot during the rigorous sessions and were delighted by the dynamism of the sessions and the variety of learning techniques. Mr. Rajendra S. Vidaya, Managing Trustee, Sita Devi Foundation, found the sessions “very lively and understandable”, to him “the most important thing is that I have been running away from Accounting for the past ten years, but now I realize how important it is for a CEO to have a general view of all accounting terms [and] procedures for creating an ethical, effective and sustainable organisation.”

The training programme included of a variety of plenary sessions on current issues relating to MFIs:

  • The Challenges in Indian Microfinance by Mr. Brij Mohan (Chairman, MicroSave)
  • Governance for Start-up and Nascent MFIs by Ms. Moumita Sen Sarma (Chairman, RBSFI)
  • SIDBI’s Role in Supporting the Development of Microfinance in Northern India by Ms. Bhavana Srivastava (AGM, SIDBI)
  • Microinsurance-Scope for MFIs by Prof. Sanjeev Kapoor (Professor, IIM-Lucknow)
  • Product Development by Ms. Madhurantika Moulick (Vice President-Knowledge Management & Training, MicroSave)
  • Internal Audit and Controls for MFIs by Mr. Vishrant Shukla (Manager-Finance, MicroSave)
  • Starting up an MFI-Practical Experience by Mr. Rahul Mittra (CEO, Margdarshak)
  • RBSFI’s Technical Assistance Development Programme by Ms. Maneesha Chadha (Programme Manager, RBSFI)
  • Getting the Best from MicroSave Support under the RBSFI/Cordaid by Mr. Byomkesh Mishra (Assistant Manager, ABN Amro Bank)
  • Experiences with the RBSFI / Cordaid MFI Development Programme by Mr. R.R. Kalyan (Executive Director, CDOT)
